LOCKED UP Helena Mutanen delights in working with archetypes and unexpected meetings between the permissible and the forbidden, between that which is evident and that which is inexpressible, the anticipated and the surprising. The ambiguities in her work disarm, amuse and destabilize Using both terror and humor as lure Helena Mutanen brings the darkest recesses of the soul to light, places where fear is concealed, fear of being without control and fear of death, our most primeval concerns. Her imprisonment theme using keys and locks is both bare and aesthetically stimulating and presents many metaphorical possibilities. The closed lock as a symbol of suffocating powerlessness, the coils of keys as a gasping for freedom…these symbols illustrate not only repression and ‘correction’ by society of its citizens but also paralyzing self-imposed limitations and shortcomings and the constant struggle to overcome these . Her art work engages us all. Lars W Andersson Managing Director of Kalmar Castle June the 13th - September the 13th Place: THE WOMEN´S PRISON |
